I ate my rollinia while we were getting ready to leave. It wasn't optimally ripe, but it got soft enough to dig out parts of the insides with my bare fingers and get a taste, at least! Very delicate lemon pudding.
And, I didn't know it, but Dean took a photo of our last sunset while I was packing upstairs. Goodbye Na Hale.

Long hot walk over endless fields of lava to my very favorite beach, Ke-awa-iki. It's so clear and beautiful today and I can see Kohala, Mauna Kea & Hualalai all at the same time. I went for a walk by myself and got (intentionally) splashed. Well, I didn't intend to get that splashed, but the ocean wanted to get all over me. Then the long walk wasn't hot on the way back. :)
Photos:
- View of Kohala (extinct volcano) from the spot on the side of Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway where we park the Jeep to walk to Ke-awa-iki beach.
- View of Mauna Kea (inactive volcano) from the same spot as the previous photo.
- View of Hualalai (dormant volcano) from the same spot as the previous two photos.
- Dean beginning the Long Hot Walk Through Endless Fields of Lava to Ke-awa-iki.
- Ocean in view! Almost there!
- The Lone Palm on the north side of the bay at Ke-awa-iki. ♥
- My feet on pahoehoe lava. :)
- View of Mauna Kea from Ke-awa-iki. You can see the telescopes on top.
- View of The Lone Palm and Kohala from the south side of Ke-awa-iki. I like all the old runny-down looking lava flows.
- One last head shot, on the lava. I got lots of freckles!

I thought I was fine about leaving, but I'm SAD. That's good I guess. It's hard to say goodbye.
Sitting outside in front of Kona Mountain, drinking my very last coffee, I kept getting all teary every time I tried to speak. I told Dean I wished I could rewind and do this month all over again. He thought I meant I wanted to stay longer, but I don't want to stay longer. That's different. A month is long enough, and I don't want to be here in April. I want to experience March all over again.

I miss the Keauhou Farmers' Market ALREADY! :( I thought I was totally fine about leaving but now I feel a little wistful. I wish I could go back and relive the final market visit all over again.

Such a nice final Keauhou Farmer's Market. We went late, about 11:00, and left as the farmers were beginning to pack up their tents. First stop was Lulo Guy's stand, of course. I didn't expect him to have any popsicles left so late; still, my face fell when I asked and Bruce responded, "Kona coffee?" I thought he was offering a sample of his Kona coffee as a consolation prize, but he meant he had a Kona coffee popsicle! It was really good, but drippy. :-) He also said, "I have a lulo story for you." Me: "Let's hear it!" The story was that he'd had only two lulos for the market, but another guy (who grew lulos from one of Bruce's plants) had come and given him more lulos. Of those, he'd saved two just for us! ♥ He gave them to us for free. I wish I'd thanked him more... thinking about it later, I was really touched.
He also asked us what our most memorable thing had been on this trip to Hawaii, and I said I didn't really have one specific thing, but my favorite parts were going to the farmers markets and diving. He didn't know we were divers, and was really interested in that. He wanted us to catch him a lobster while diving and trade it for lulos! Haha! I asked him if he'd been to the new Fish Farmers' Market at the Natural Energy Labs gateway, and he didn't know anything about it, so I told him he'd should definitely go. He told me all about how great abalone is, and now I want to try it! If the Fish Farmers' Market is still going on next year, I will have to get some. He shook both our hands to say goodbye until next year. He has a good, firm handshake.
Cye was between sets when we first got there, and his CD was playing instead. Dean recognized "Green Harvest" from all the way across the market, even though I could barely hear it! I was really impressed. Later, he finished his break and started performing with a whole band (two extra guys). Usually it's just him on acoustic guitar! I like solo Cye best, but it was still cool. When we walked by to leave, I waved goodbye and he looked really surprised and asked, "You're still here?" over the microphone in the middle of the song! (He misunderstood me and thought we only had one more day left last week.)
We each got an avocado summer roll (and, of course, a shared lilikoi juice) from Lotus Guy, and, after we'd eaten them, went back for a some soy & coconut milk gelato. I told Howie how I love his sign that says in gigantic letters "ICE CREAM!!!" and in really small print, so you can only see it after you're lured in close, "(better than)." Dean got coconut again, but he was all out of chocolate, so I got the only cup of this mysterious flavor that he wasn't sure what it was. It turned out to be ginger chai, and was highly delicious. Howie told us all these incredibly amusing stories about his travels to Jamaica and his early days in Hawaii, while we ate our gelato. I asked him about the "Green Harvest" and he explained what it was.
The lady with my favorite lilikoi bars was all out (tragic!), but she had a new kind of green-colored lime bar made with avocado, a little lilikoi, and cream cheese, which she described as "creamcheesy" and said if that wasn't a word, it should be. So true. Anything creamcheesy has got to be good. I bought one to bring back to our place and eat later. :-)
Oh yeah, I also brought back all my empty jam jars, and returned them to the sellers so they can reuse them. When I held out Colehour's and asked, "Would you like this back?" he just said, "Yes" and snatched it. It was so funny. He's odd but I really like him. (Okay, I like him because he's odd! And I mean that in a good way. Odd is good.) He also asked if I wanted a DVD about the truth about Kona coffee and I said, "Absolutely." :-)
As we walked away, I kept wanting to look back at all the stands with their white tented roofs, and Bruce packing up... :-( :-( Love LOVE the Keahou Farmers' Market.

Final Lotus! :-( Getting chicken mango tango and green curry vegetable fried rice. I was going to be good and try an orange mango lassi but they were out of mangoes so I was thwarted.

Wow! We went to the debut of the fish farmers' market. The Kona Sea Salt guy was all excited when I said I'd be their fan on Facebook. They're new on FB and need fans. I told him I have their salt and love it so I'm definitely a fan. The coolest thing was the abalone stand where the guy was grilling up big abalone in half shells and the abalones were squirming all around while being cooked! I did not get any. They also had big stretchy tables with white plastic tablecloths with people chowing down on corn on the cob and steamed lobster, acting like they were in New England. And they had lobster tails on lettuce leaves. They need to get lobster rolls! In addition, there was a Slow Food booth, a Spirulina Pacifica stand (I have some at home!), and a few fish stands. We didn't get anything but it was cool to check out. Must go back next year and compare!

Wow! I've never in my life been so complimented for a packaging job! The post office guy must have praised details of our boxes at least 3 or 4 times. While we stood in line, was reading a very interesting blog post about another box out loud to Dean... :-)

I tried the grumichama and the noni! (Forgot to mention, I bought grumichama, aka "Brazilian cherries" at UGG at the same time I got the rollinia.) Noni isn't terrible, but it's certainly nothing you'd want to eat. I only took a few bites. It's really hard, full of seeds (so, incredibly difficult to cut/gnaw off a chunk) and not very tasty. The grumichama are pretty good. Similar to cherries, but a little more acidic and not as yummy. They have weird large seeds (sometimes more than one) that are easy to remove while eating them. I like the cute crowns on the bottoms.

Final solo Jeep mission: mailed two padded envelopes at P.O. with lots and lots of stamps, then returned tanks at Big. The post office lady was very impressed with my stamp collection, especially the Duke stamps. She said that other new Hawaiian stamp is out of print already, too! Good thing I bought a few sheets. I still have a bunch of sheets of Duke, since Dean made me buy tons.
Josh and Frank were at Big, so I got to say bye to them (Josh hugged me) and Josh told me about the shore dive spot he mentioned on Facebook (saying he'd tell us next time he saw us, but that was never!). It's at Wawaloli, where we were already considering trying to dive! He didn't know it was called Wawaloli, but he drew me a cool little map and I knew exactly where he was talking about. We will have to try diving 'loli next year at the spot where he said! He doesn't really like diving there himself because he likes it DEEP, but it sounds like something we'd like, with lots of nudibranchs and creatures. He said it gets to 60 feet or so.

We had to kill time so we wouldn't be early to Ke'ei, so I went to Antiques & Orchids and the Horse Head (while Dean read mags in the Jeep). A&O had super-cool looking uranium glass, displayed in a case lit by a black light. It glows!
My ahi sashimi was insanely beautiful. And it was SO good. Order that next time if they have it. Order it order it order it!
Also lovely to gaze upon: Kailua Candy Company's lilikoi cheesecake with honu (mac nut turtle) chocolate crust and chocolate ganache frosting. Yes, it was as delicious as it looks.
And I was just saying to Dean that it was sad that I hadn't seen any starfruit ths year!

Our 10th visit to Hawaii, but we'd never before visited the Painted Church! (That's what the extortion money donation at the Honaunau parking lot is supposedly for.) We thought it would just be a shack with walls that were painted a bunch of weird colors, but it was actually nice. I loved this sign.
The coolest part was definitely The Handwriting on the Wall painting. (Belshazzar!) Instead of "Mene, Mene, Tekel u-Pharsin," the words are written in Hawaiian: "Ua Emi Loa Oe Ua Pau Kou Aupuni / Make No Ka Pono" Literally: "You are found wanting. Your kingdom ceases. Should die."
Afterwards, we stopped at the South Kona Fruit Stand for a drink, and Beth was there!! :-)
She had Mapulehu mangos and told me they're really special. I wanted to buy one, but I couldn't because it wouldn't be ripe enough to eat before we leave. Maybe I can try it another time if I'm really lucky! I did get a noni. I didn't know you can actually eat noni! She said you can if they are just the right ripeness, and helped me pick out an appropriate one. (Will try it tomorrow...) According to Beth, if they're are too ripe, they are really disgusting, and if they're too unripe they're super-hard and inedible. I also took a picture of this jackfruit (that's Beth's hand, adding some size perspective). The texture reminds me of a cushion star (NICE!), but it smelled like an onion! I didn't buy it, but I have eaten jackfruit.

WONDERFUL final dive at Pebbly! 86 minutes!!!! Definitely a new record!
AND, I just bought a rollinia! (!!!) Shortest time on "Weird foods I especially want to try" list before actually procuring???
Now it just needs to ripen up!

Pebble Beach dive slate notes:
I love going out when it's rough, through the giant waves! Nothing to see but bubbles. Push you back and carry you out.
Everywhere I look, there's that wrasse!
Small & shy octy.
(Idea: Do a fish of the week Learn Your Fish drawing.)
I saw green linckia's tummy out! Same one we saw before?
Spanish Dancer eggs mass - pretty! I could see all the little eggs. I wonder if it would be yummy? [Nudibranch roe???! Hm!]
white / yellow tentacles / spotted / grows
brittles - big red cukes - mauve under the rubble creatures ♥
beautiful + perfect heart urchin shell [carried back through the waves/pebbles without breaking by putting in goody bag and tying it to Dean's tank!]
this is going to be the longest dive ever!
hotsnapz + shallow + fun = longest dive ever! [the "+ fun" part was added by Dean!]
endless air!
86 minutes!
D=100 L=200
More photos: 1) I was laughing so hard when Dean was trying to take this picture... as brittle stars always do, it kept constantly running around everywhere. B) That wrasse again!!! He's so cute when he opens his mouth like this. 3) Talking to the wrasse, while doing my safety stop. He seemed only vaguely interested in the heart urchin shell. Such a nice final dive. I ♥ Pebbly.

We went on the special anti-choke bypass that's only temporarily open because of the tree trimming, and it worked brilliantly! There was NO ONE else on it, and we emerged right before the Horse Head to a HUGE choke going the other direction. Complete choke avoidal!

There's going to be a new Fish Farmers' Market on Friday at NELHA! It's on the last Friday of March, April, May and June. Ha, that's cute--fish Friday! I hope we can stop by tomorrow if we have time while bringing stuff to the Na Hale o Storage.

Nooooooo! The camera got hit by a big Wawaloli SPLASH! Dean's trying to fix it with Metromint. Luckily, I wasn't the one using it!
Posted at 4:31:00 PM by Laura W. Petix.
I found some salt licks at Loli and they're like the crème brulée of salt! There's a thin crust on top and it's all watery underneath. I brought one over to show Dean and he said "Eat it!" so I did, but then he said, "Yuck! Look how much you took!" and "Spit it out!" I didn't though. :-)
I found a really pretty loli over near the Splash! area, with fancy flowery tentacles. It's raining a little but not much.
Photos: 1) SPLASH! B) Dean's solution for the rain. 3) Some dude offered to take my picture when he saw me tidepooling around. When he was taking it, he asked me, "Who is the picture for?" I thought that was a really weird question and said, "My husband, I guess." I'm sort of thinking, "????" here. 4) I like this head shot better. :) The other pic does show the surroundings more, though. 5) The fancy sea cucumbers in a crack in the lava. I totally love these guys. And note the flat-bottomed helmet urchin shell! Right after Dean took this pic, the next entry occurred...

felt nauseated during dive, and a little bit afterwards, too :( [Dean suggested maybe it was from all the waves during our long surface swim. Weird. I didn't even notice because I was pushing through, swim swim swimming fast. I've never felt nauseated during a dive before. Maybe he's right.] good dive - deep discs, crown, unbelievably beautiful electric uni star
i love saltines kings shops Sweet Paradise artisanal chocolates: fresh mint, macadamia "Nutella" flower, dreamy caramel, lilikoi silk, Tatitian lime, and mango mojito
tried on fins (Cressi Pluma) in jack's pool - felt so good swimming around free with no tank! the jack's guy said it would be really impressive if I could fetch rocket toy from bottom of the 12 ft section, but it was easy. Dean said I looked cool swimming. I liked the closed toes, but the fins weren't tight enough. I want to swim in the pool at home! matzo ball soup
Dive slate notes: Puako Mar 23 partly sunny I always get way ahead on the surface swim here! --- buoy already?! --- swimming out far far to eels --- descent - wow I can really feel HotSnapZ now! :-) whales! not super loud they sound nice --- 22 min in add HotSnap to front radiate down arms ♥
Tummy is so soft! nice COT!
amazing looking star on long-spined uni - electric looking blue & turquoise!
Photos: 1) I love this sign on the road near where we dive at Puako. B) My dear old battle-scarred irreplaceable silver Seac Sub fins, descending into the blue. 3) This hawkfish and eel looked like they were feuding! 4) I actually didn't see this nice-looking eel. I was too busy making friends with the guy in the next photo to pay any attention to what Dean was fooling around taking pictures of. 5) Such a great crown-of-thorns! It had really long spines (I'm measuring how tall one of them is, with my finger as a reference), and several stubby arms that it was re-growing. It also had the SOFTEST stomach, when I turned it over and petted its belly. 6) So fantastically thorny! 7) We tried to take a good photo of this, but it was impossible. You can just barely see the electric-blue and turquoise star shape, but in person it was almost too amazing-looking to believe.

It's cool and breezy out this afternoon! Dean's not feeling well today, so I went on extra-big solo mission, and now I'm sitting outside wearing my Oshima beater and Ocean Minded shoes (with shorts). Feels pretty nice! The weather has been so great this trip... it was only hot once (when I was at the Wednesday Market) and this is the only time it's been cold-ish. Hmmm... it looks fuzzy out over the horizon... I think it's started to rain!
Ohh, I just went out from under the roof and stood out in it! It's a nice straight-up-and-down warm rain, with far-apart drops that feel prickly on my outstretched hands. Nice!!! It doesn't look like it's raining unless you stare at the dark green trees. It doesn't show against the sky or buildings or flowers or grass. Mmmm, now I can smell it!
Anyway, I went to the quilting fabric store at King Kamehameha Mall (my Guy pronounces this so endearingly... it doesn't even do the Mall part right! It thinks it's "male" for some reason! I ♥ hearing my Guy try to pronounce Kamehameha so much!) and browsed around really thoroughly. It's nice and small, so you can look at every bolt. And it has really beautiful batiks and stuff. It reminds me of the Close to Home store in Glastonbury, but littler and with an even nicer selection. Dean's mom wanted me to look for some Hawaiian quilt fabric for her, but they didn't really have anything like what she described... however, I did pick out three fabrics for myself, to try to make a skirt like the ALB-ish looking one I got here at Honolua Surf. I think it looks pretty easy to make (I hope). I totally love how the fabrics I got look together. Two (or maybe all three?) of the ones I got are Robert Kaufman brand, and two are "Kona Cotton." I don't know what that means, but has a really nice texture, with a thicker weave. Two are geometric mod prints and one has batik stars that look like starfish!
I also went to the International Market and bought another super soft t-shirt. It actually fits me really well and isn't even insanely long or anything! It has a million things about the ocean written on it. :-) I love all the stuff it says. Will have to take a picture, but I'm wearing it right now.
The edge of the roof overhang is drip drip dripping. I think it stopped raining already. It feels nice to do nothing today. I feel like I've done (almost) everything I wanted to (you never do everything you want to), and I'm ready to go home whenever. I love it here, but a month is enough. It will be good to see spring.

I'm so confused. When I woke up this morning, my watch said it was 5:40 AM, but I could tell by the light coming in the window that it couldn't be true. I looked at my Palm, and it was actually 7:40. My watch is off by exactly two hours. It was correct last night. What's going on here?? Did I go through a time warp in my sleep? Was I abducted by aliens? Seriously, how is this even possible? (And no, I don't have a radio-controlled watch. My Mido is an automatic!)

We have a really great table, on the far right end of the upper outside section. It's a very oceany spot. We got to see the torch runner guy lighting the tiki torches and blowing his shell horn! (Is it a Triton's trumpet??) Sunset seems like it's in the wrong place. We were both expecting it to be farther to the left. I was looking in this very precise spot where I expected to see it, but no sun. That must be the November sunset location!
Dean's tomato contest results: 1) purple, 2) red, 3) green. They were all good, but none were as good as a New England tomato in summer!
Me, to Dean: "This is how fish should be." I.e., moist and tender. Not hard and slab-y. Now I get to add wing beans to my weird food list! The crunchy black sea salt on the snow peas was the best part though. Dean: "The salt is the best part of the meal? You must not like it very much." Me: "No, I do! You know how much I love salt..."
Everything was good! But they changed how they make their crème brulée, so Pahu I`a is no longer the Best Crème Brulée ever. (As you will recall, we awarded it that title last year.) It was really down the well, with a thick pile of all this crunchy crumbly nutty stuff on top (not soft and crumb strudel topping-ish like last year, but more like candied nuts) and a really thin layer of crème underneath (previously the crème part was extremely deep and insanely vanilla bean-ish). The top layer totally ruined it. Instead of being elegant like a crème brulée is supposed to be, it reminded me of a candy bar. Dean kept trying to defend it, saying, "Maybe people like it better that way!" but if they do they have really horrible taste. I tried scraping it off, but half of the crème clug to it, so there was hardly anything good underneath. The accompanying warm mini-malasada was really amazing, though.
The waves were big today, but it was only a little windy. I brought the pashmina Sara gave me, and it was perfect. Light, but so soft and warm. Pahu is the pashmina place, after all.
Posted at 7:40:00 PM by Laura W. Petix.
Pahu I`a doesn't seem long in the tooth! (I feared it would be, based on some online reviews.) They have a new menu format, but it looks really good.
And I ordered: Moi - mango tea steamed, toasted sesame sauce, japanese eggplant, wing beans Kona Cod - miso-sake glazed, snow peas, pea shoots, tamaki rice cake, ume-shiso infusion
I admit I chose the moi partly because I wanted to eat wing beans! But it was a v.v.v. good selection, regardless.

When I was picking out the two ripest apple-bananas for a bananalulo smoothie, I noticed this one had a naturally-occurring message! Clearly a very friendly banana. Bananalulos = sooooooo good. Aaaagh. Dean and I both think so. And I can't make any more until we manage to procure more Meadow Gold plain yogurt! KTA only had two last time we went (we bought both, of course).
Since this morning was our last South Kona Green Market, Dean finally got his Coconut Pete drinking coconut, and we got to satisfy our Do Next Time item from last year about getting one and observing Pete. He seemed even more extreme this time. The coconut was really really good, though--the best ever! First we drank the coconut water inside (fortunately, I had saved my Lotus Guy lilikoi juice straw, since Pete didn't give us one, and it would be difficult to drink the coconut without spilling it all over your shirt), then we brought it back and Pete macheted it in half for us (watching him with that thing is SO scary). Dean gave him a $5 tip and he then proceeded to scrape out the inside for us (all in one piece) with this cool curved coconut-scraper tool, sliced it all into nice little easy-to-eat pieces, and asked us if we wanted an orange squeezed on top. We said sure, so he cut one in half and squoze one half over each coconut half (it was very impressive how effortlessly he did this with his bare hand!) It was REALLY good with the orange juice on top! Wow, awesome treat. Dean says we'll have to try the newbie coconut guy at the Keauhou market next week and see how he compares. Dean admitted it is so true that I always try to get him to buy a coconut and he never wants to, but then when he finally does he loves it and wishes he'd done it sooner.
My Lotus Guy chicken summer roll seemed so good today (I mean, extra-ly so). I massively wanted another one, but I refrained, so we could get quiche and the best-ever thick and soft chocolate chip mac nut oatmeal cookies from the One Day Cafe stand (I noticed today that that's what it's called). The quiche was fresh and warm out of the oven because they ran out and the stand lady went home to fetch more. So good! Aaaaaagh, last time we get to eat those cookies!!! I hope they still have them next year!
Lotus Guy said to make sure we say goodbye before we leave. Of course! :-) We'll see him next Saturday at the Keauhou market (if not before then, if we go to the cafe when he's there).
Dean was really good and only bought two papayas (even though he tried to sneak in a 3rd... he put it back when I caught him and pointed out he claimed he was only going to buy two). I was very proud. :-) He has four from yesterday (two big ones from Colehour, two from another stand), and only five papaya-eating days left, so two was a reasonable amount. He always gets over eager and buys way too many and then they all get ripe at the same time, leading to a massive Suder Situation. Poor Dean. We also got some Rangpur, to go with our Shochu!
I'm writing this outside on the lanai at my semi-comfortable table. It's all overcast and pleasantly cool now; I hope it rains... It was sunny and so clear and beautiful this morning--actual blue sky and visible horizon. We have dinner reservations at Pahu I`a tonight for our fake anniversary. (They always ask if it's a special occasion, and Dean tells them it's our anniversary! I guess you can celebrate your anniversary whenever you want...) I hope Pahu isn't long in the tooth!
