Laura: "I want to know about the GUY! I want to know about Daniel!"
Dean: "Horses."

I had a dream last night about a really gigantic snake (nowhere near as gigantic as that hip-high extinct one, though). We were staying at a condo on vacation (I hope it wasn't in Hawaii, since there are no snakes in Hawaii), and all the units looked out on a central, very lush courtyard. The giant snake was out in the courtyard, and it was out to get me. It pushed its way under our front door (which had weatherstripping!) and chomped me on the ankle. After that it was out in the courtyard again and I kept telling Dean to take a picture of it out the window (since it was so huge, this would be very easy) so we could show the hospital and they'd know what kind of snake bit me. The snake started rising up and looking in the second-floor windows for me (I think it grew bigger), whilst I was freaking out. It looked a lot like Alexander (LC member). Green-patterned and boa-esque.

Hmm, I just realized why I had a snake dream out of the blue. I was reading A Wind in the Door in bed last night. It's all because of Louise the Larger! Weird, since Louise is good (and black, and not gigantic). I actually wasn't very scared from the dream, though, so maybe that's why.

!!! October post on The Kona Times blog: "After some months of competition with the newer free paper, The Big Island Weekly, the Hawaii Island Journal is no where to be found." :-( Oh well, it had been kind of downhill recently. But that's sad.

Also, the Royal Thai Cafe is under new management! But the Island Naturals Market & Deli finally came in January, so that's exciting! It was "Coming Soon" back in April.

Here are a couple of Thursday photos, of me in my new Mint Jelly shirt from Blackbird Tees on Etsy. I got it on sale! The first one shows the jelly better, but the second one shows my face. :-) I only made a couple of tiny mods to the shirt: cutting off three inches from the bottom (I just left the raw edge to curl) and tailoring the sleeves so they're a little tighter and don't make my arms look as much like sticks. And no, we don't really have lime green walls; the photo just came out looking that way. The rest of the colors are pretty accurate, though. The shirt is very minty. (Maybe a little too minty.)

Things I've been extra-extra enjoying lately, other than purple carrots:

1) Darjeeling tea (Twinings, natch) made using my special Blomus teastick modernist sinkme from the MOMA design store. I got it in April 2008, but I had never actually used it (since I don't make tea very often) until a couple of weeks ago when I couldn't warm up and was craving Darjeeling. It's the cat's meow! Reallyreally, it's the best sinkme design I have ever encountered. The slide-out drawer section perfectly holds one teaspoon of leaves (so you don't have to measure with a teaspoon; you can just use the teastick to scoop them up), and there's exactly enough space inside the chamber for them to expand during steeping. It's 100% easy, neat, non-drippy and elegant, and you can even use the stick to stir the tea before you remove it, so the infusion is well-distributed.

B) Pink grapefruit with vanilla sugar on top! Still. Ever since Christmas.

3) International Fabulous Flats' Tandoori Naan. Gak. I've seen it in the stores for a while, but never tried it until recently. This is the best naan we've ever tasted. There's something about the flavor that reminds us of donuts. Whenever we have it with soup or Indian food, I always just scarf mine straight because I don't want to drown out any of the taste.

4) Purple carrots.

My shoulders are killing me from cringing because of the wind, and I'm not even in the wind! Ridiculous.

Aaagh, my "wind friend" is driving me to distraction. It woke me up this morning (there's a wind advisory in effect, with a warning that "winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts around 50 mph are expected") and then kept wuthering and wuthering until I couldn't stand it any longer and just got up. I'm in a constant state of cringe, and I'm not even outside in it! On the upside, I have to stay home to wait for a package, anyway. (New Tiv! Our ancient one is starting to have trouble dialing up for its updates.)

It was 63° out yesterday (!!). Felt like fake spring, and I drove around with my moonroof open. Today it's about 40, with the windchill. That's still pretty warm, though, especially compared to the recent single digits! I'm hungry. Does wind make you hungry?

P.S. I'm in love with the purple carrots.

Do purple carrots count as a weird food? I wouldn't think so, but the cashier, bagger, and person in line behind me at Big W sure seemed to. They were particularly amazed that I was buying them without ever having tried them before, so I couldn't answer their "What do they taste like???" inquiries. What's so crazy about sampling a new food? They acted like I was the most adventurous eater ever. They're just carrots! And now that I have eaten them, I can report: they are really tasty! And the core is orange, but with a thick ring of deep purple from the skin on in. It's a great combination. They're beautiful and I love them.
