Got my first Christmas card today, from Diane! It says "Hope this is your 1st card of 2008 Christmas card contest. Good luck and I hope you win." Woo hoo!! :-) I'm going to wipe the floor with Dean this year! (Maybe.)

I really really like the new Christmas album I bought on iTunes.

I felt like wrapping tonight, so that's what I'm doing. Even though I haven't written my cards yet, and I haven't caught up on my ALB trip entries, and I haven't hung any ornaments (except the ray). I just felt like wrapping, so I am. I love wrapping. Love LOVE it. Choosing the perfect paper. The preciseness of the folds. The resulting neat little package that makes secret what's inside. Normally I save wrapping for a close-to-Christmas pleasure, but this year wrapping is happening now. I think I'll be glad later anyway because, even though I love it, it can be a bit overwhelming all near the end. Maybe wrapping's like packing--better spread out a little for smooth smoothliness.

Today at Whole Foods, I remarked out loud, "Wow--I'd love it if someone got me this for Christmas," and the orange overalls-wearing fishmonger stocking the shelf laughed and replied, "I'll tell the next person who comes along." It was funny because whenever people ask me for Christmas hints it's really hard for me to think of anything I actually want. But even though it was packaged as a gift set, the thing wasn't really something that would be too easy to give a person, because it needs to be refrigerated.

Okay, even though I don't know whether I'm going to decorate my tree this year, I already failed to resist buying more ornaments! But they're such nice ones, I had to. I got them at Whole Foods. They're handcrafted wooden ones, made with chisels and carving knives from blocks of fruit wood by woodcarvers on the mountains of Bali. That's what it says on the label, at least. And each one is unique and signed by the artist. Not only that, but for each sale, a donation is made to The National Arbor Day Foundation to plant trees in our national forests. Wow, huh? They were cheap, too. Anyway I got them most of all because I really like them. One's an eagle ray and one's a SNAKE! It's a coral snake, I think. Or one of those nice snakes that pretends to be a coral snake by copying their colors in a slightly different configuration. I'm not sure which. The website has a picture of the ray, but not the snake. And it also has a picture of a GROUPER!! The store didn't have any groupers. :(

Yesterday at the post office, the new lady (who is not very new anymore, but I still think of her as the new lady) tried to tell me this was "not a stamp." We even got into a little back-and-forth argument about it. A post office clerk who can't even recognise a non-contemporary postage stamp?? Aaagh. That stamp is a classic! I didn't let it bug me, though... I was just like, "It is a stamp, but it doesn't matter... you don't need to cancel it, anyway." I already had enough postage on the envelope even without counting the partridge in a pear tree.

*sigh* I miss Postmaster Dave.

Shiny black sky, clear white sliver of a moon with two bright companion stars (planets?), the only lights in the heavens. It's rainy but it's mild today, and everything sparkles. I love being welcomed home in the dark by my glowing Christmas tree.

[Edit: It's Jupiter and Venus! And Dean noticed, too. He wanted me to come out and see, but I already had!]

JANUARY 28TH??????!!!! Waaaah!! I want to know about the basement now!

Oh yeah, we're back, as of Friday night. We put up the Christmas tree today! The Floor Guy even helped with the lights, and it was a big help! I also addressed most of my Christmas cards yesterday, and unpacked. And we washed all the gear in my bathtub and hung it up to dry in the basement. Our basement, that is, not the Life on Mars basement.

Did not type up any of my missing blog entries yet, but my deadline is this Saturday. I have notes for them all. It snowed today, a little! For supper we snacked around and I ate tongues. Also, I updated my home page with a new head photo from Grand. The former one was from Grand in '06, so it just seemed right.
